Scripture

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”

John 15:9–13 (ESV)

Lyrics · My Song Is Love Unknown
Verse 1 My song is love unknown, my Savior's love to me
Love to the loveless shown that they might lovely be
Oh, who am I that for my sake
My Lord should take frail flesh and die?
Verse 2 He came from His blest throne salvation to bestow
but men made strange, and none the longed-for Christ would know
But oh, my Friend, my Friend indeed
who at my need His life did spend
Verse 3 Sometimes they strew His way, and His strong praises sing
Resounding all the way hosannas to their King
Then "Crucify!" is all their breath
And for His death they thirst and cry
Verse 4 Why, what hath my Lord done? What makes this rage and spite?
He made the lame to run, He gave the blind their sight
Sweet injuries! Yet they at these
Themselves displease, and 'gainst Him rise
Verse 5 They rise, and needs will have my dear Lord made away
A murderer they save, the Prince of Life they slay
Yet steadfast He to suff'ring goes
That He His foes from thence might free
Verse 6 In life no house, no home my Lord on earth might have
In death no friendly tomb but what a stranger gave
What may I say? Heav'n was his home
But mine the tomb wherein he lay
Verse 7 Here might I stay and sing, no story so divine
Never was love, dear King, never was grief like Thine
This is my Friend, in Whose sweet praise
I all my days could gladly spend

Story Behind the Song

“My Song Is Love Unknown” tells the story of the greatest love there is: God’s love for us, seen most clearly at the cross.

The words were written by Samuel Crossman in 1664, and John Ireland wrote the melody much later, in 1919. As Grace notices, it is wonderful that we can still sing a hymn written so long ago.

The hymn follows the story we read in the Gospels, through Jesus’ life and into His death. It asks questions that help us stop and wonder: what had Jesus done to deserve this? He had no sin of His own. He took the punishment for ours.

Some of the old words may sound a little strange at first. We encourage you to listen a little and take time to understand them. There is beautiful poetry here, and a story worth learning together.

Something to Think About

“Love to the loveless shown that they might lovely be”

Love, loveless, and lovely. These three words help us think about the love God has shown us. His love for us is the most beautiful thing about us.

As you listen and sing, talk about these questions together:

  • What does this hymn tell us about Jesus’ love?
  • Which words would you like to understand better?
  • How might his love for us shape our love for others?

Prayer

Father in heaven, thank You for Your everlasting, steadfast love. Thank You that You loved us so much that You sent Your Son to die for us, that we might have life. Thank You that You are a friend to sinners, a friend to me.

May the words of the hymn help me praise You and thank You for all You have done. May more people hear of Your kindness.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
